Having been the user of a bluetooth mighty mouse for several months now, I can say that the initial fear of the "single-button" mouse has disappeared for me. It's actually a two-button mouse - it has a right-click. The mouse translates that by touch. If you click the button while both fingers are on the mouse, it considers that a left click. Lift your index finger off the mouse and click with your right finger is considered a right-click. It works better than you might think and I've not found myself needing a replacement.

As for the midrange computer - there is a bit of hacking that can be done on Apple hardware, especially now that they have gone Intel. I know there's people out there tearing open their Mac Minis (which again, aren't going away IMHO) and Apple TV's... there's even folks dismantling iMacs. But you'll find that what I said a few comments up holds true - when you are forced to deal with the fact that you're not fixing things very often in the software or hardware, you'll be forced to actually USE the damn thing. That's been the biggest adjustment for me.

A reasonably-priced mid-range Mac with open, non-proprietary hardware would sell me in a minute. As it is, I'm still leaning toward buying an iMac as my next PC (especially if new models come out later this summer as rumored), but I'll miss being able to tinker around and upgrade a few individual components to increase its lifespan a little.

Oh, and I'll never get over the concept of the one-button mouse. Yeah, I know you can use any USB mouse with a Mac, but it's the principle of the thing.

That's a good point. I upgraded my video for WoW then stopped playing. I've been futzing around with the OS more because I was bored, and less out of any actual need.

I'm actually not missing it. Through the magic of having this conversation with myself over this issue for a while now, I've discovered that I actually do not do much with my computer. I'm always fixing it. If something's not broken with it, I'm bored with it and doing something else or trying to break it again.

With the Mac, I'm forced to be productive and crank things out... actually use the damn thing... because things do not break very often at all. That's been an unusual journey for me, but a good one ;)

You've pegged it.

By the time I buy a new computer, I've gradually replaced the majority of the components. This is only my second computer, but I'm running pretty true to form on that. I have yet to build one from scratch, but that's mostly because I wanted the safety net of tech support - though once I've replaced half the hardware and changed the OS, that support is toast, but I just haven't been willing to go out on the limb.

And now with the decision to go Mac, I won't get that option. It's kinda sad.
