I think ratings are great! The NC17's and "R" ratings are the only ones that restrict, and it only restricts underage viewing. It prevents parents from having to worry about their kids going to the mall to watch "Shrek 12" with some friends and instead watching "Saw 300".

Personally I use the rating to judge if I want to watch the movie. If it's R or NC-17, I don't watch it and my kids don't watch it. I started that right after Matrix came out and I don't personally feel like I've missed anything decent. Considering an "R" rating kind of assumes the movie has a low "decency" quality anyway... lol.

The great thing about ratings is that I get to choose what level of content I want to watch without having to actually WATCH it first. I know if it's "R" that it will contain content that I prefer to not see or hear, so I avoid it. You might make a different choice, but the cool part is we are informed enough to make a choice. Otherwise I might have to actually pay to start watching a movie, only to get up in the middle and leave.

i could see the point in rating online videos. I actually don't mind the idea of ratings, I just mind the idea of things being governmentally limited due to said ratings... I.E. no film maker wants an NC17 because their tickets sales will undoubtedly be much lower than if it's not.
The reason the government feels a need to do this is because parents don't do their jobs... I knew gradeschoolers who played grand theft auto; and they were not smart, bulletproof gradeschoolers like your daughter.
