iTWire – From Windows to Linux – and back again

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again… the battle for the corporate desktop is fought at home. Microsoft has known this for a long time – Apple knows it too. That’s why Apple is sneaking up on Microsoft and they’re just not paying attention. They’re too busy mucking around in other businesses that they don’t belong in instead of focusing on the real business (operating systems, servers and Office).

Here’s one of those technical blog posts that I’ve been meaning to post for a while now, but did not have the chance to do. Since I’m sitting here in the Baltimore airport next to a German-looking girl with extremely long hair, I’ve decided to work on the blog post so I do not appear to be admiring her hair.

On one of my visits to a NASA center, I was asked to look at a desktop situation that had really, really puzzled the local desktop techs. They had migrated the user to our mail system from the legacy system. The profile had been converted over to the new mail system, rather than a full wipe and reload of Outlook settings and whatnot (like we recommend).

Today I embark on a three week journey from one side of the states to the other.  I’m taking this trip with nothing less than a blessing from the wife, who will have to endure three weeks of my son raising hell.

This is one of the more complex trips I’ve ever had to put together as it involves flying in to multiple airports and driving to other townships mid-trip.  The last portion of the trip involves staying over in San Francisco so that I might traipse off to San Jose.

While I’m not as optimistic as my buddy Tony on the increase of Linux market share, I am definitely in line with him on the decrease of Microsoft market share.  As I continue my march toward converting to an all-Mac environment at home, Windows has been relegated to not much more than a gaming console.  Even that is somewhat doomed though, as I’m starting to discover some of the newest games have outgrown this almost 4-year old PC.  That’s fine, I’ll just start gaming on the Wii and continuing on with my old games.

I should also file this under jealousy that this is only the fifth entry and it’s already been Dugg to the front page. Bother.

There’s a gotcha with migrating to Exchange 2007. If your enterprise is still halfway through an Office 2007 rollout (or better yet, if it’s not even begun), you should be aware that users of the delegation features in Outlook are in for trouble.

Specifically, this KB article recommends using Outlook 2007 for “delegates in Outlook 2007 to work correctly.” I can verify that if you’re in a situation where a mailbox is migrated to Exchange 2007 using Outlook 2007, the delegate on Exchange 2003 using Outlook 2003 loses all ability to do the delegated duties.
