So, I’m sitting there watching TV, right? A bumper in the commercial comes from the local TV station and it proclaims that part of the sponsorship was from the “Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival.”
Immediate image springs to mind of a bunch of ruby-throated individuals sitting around in lawn chairs, pondering quietly.
Not too very long ago I came to the realization that in the past, I didn’t use computers to do much. It could be that I didn’t really have much to do aside from playing games and writing the occasional resume’, but as far as productivity goes, I’d never quite been in a job that required me to use the computer to be productive, in a way of speaking. I was never required to pump out much in the way of Excel spreadsheets, or Access databases. I was never required to do much more than the occasional Word document.
Johnny Hart, creator of “B.C.” and co-creator of “The Wizard of Id” died in his home today. He was 76.
His wife, Bobbie, says he suffered a stroke while working at his storyboard.
I hope you finally get to see what’s on the other side of that ocean, Johnny. We’ll miss you.
From Digg: Microsoft is going through it’s email and phone lists asking people to support their opposition to California A.B. 1668 – “Open Document Format, Open Source”. by writing to the California Assemblymen involved in this bill (contact info in the link). Let’s see if Digg can raise as much support for the CA ODF bill as they can raise opposition.
Me: I often wonder how much of HSPD-12 is due to Microsoft’s lobbying efforts in Washington. I find it quite interesting that all government agencies are moving to a single forest setup with Active Directory driving the train. The funny part is – they require smartcard integration, which is not much more than a hack for some Microsoft technologies.
Today my sister-in-law called us to say hi as usual. She spoke to her sister for a while, then my wife turned to me and informed me that Chaing Kai Shek’s summer home on Yang Ming Mountain was burned to the ground last night.
Taiwan’s president Chen Shui Bian has been engaged in a campaign to erase an important piece of Taiwan’s history from modern day life. I do not dare to try to educate anyone on any of this, except to say that Chaing Kai Shek is pretty much the founder of the Taiwan we have today. I find it odd that the president chooses to ignore his importance by erasing his name from monuments, buildings and anything else that carries his name. They have talked about removing the wall from CKS Memorial Hall as well.
The hot post today that has the blogosphere churning is this essay by Paul Graham entitled “Microsoft is Dead.”
I like the way the author of this post has just suddenly realized that Microsoft’s business model is in trouble. I had an epiphany much like this while I was in the very den of the mothership itself. While standing on the third floor of building 25 in Microsoft’s Redmond campus… fighting with their products to get some test data put through on our… unusual deployment of their products… came the word that Apple went Intel. That’s when I had the epiphany: Microsoft is toast. Thus begins their slow, painful demise as people wake up to the innovations happening elsewhere. Microsoft’s lack of supporting standards and their blind eye toward security… combined with failing in just about every endeavour except Windows and Office… was finally starting to do them in.
Alright, in an effort to expand my reader base beyond 8 or 9 people, I really whored myself out today. I’ve added back the Google Adsense ads (of which I’ve earned a whopping $15.00 in a year – hooray!) and added simple links for you to share my needles back out to the community.
Everybody else does it. Shouldn’t I make it easy for you to share my blathering elsewhere?
CNN shooting highlights safety in public workplaces
I agree. It’s too dangerous. We should just ban working in public places and force everyone to telecommute.
So the 8-core Mac Pro is introduced on the Apple Store this morning. Drool. Sadly though, it’s $1400 extra for an 8-core setup vs. a 4-core.
I should point out, though, the memory prices have dropped pretty significantly, so getting 4gb of RAM is no longer a heinous violation of your credit. They’ve also pulled back on Cinema Screen pricing by $100.
I can hardly wait to see what my corporate discount can pull off! That part of the store still isn’t open yet.
Some time ago, we had cut down and removed our troublesome apple trees.
We replaced them with Japanese cherry blossoms. I was disappointed to see that two of the trees died, but a third tree in the front yard prospered through the first year. This year, it decided to give us a little hint of what’s in store for us in the many years to come.
I must be getting old, because this is really very exciting to me.
